Blog 3 - #RISEUP Super Bowl Commercials

It's Super Bowl week, so it's only appropriate for me to kick off this next blog with my favorite released ads so far. Besides beer and football, Super Bowl ads have become an annual tradition to look forward to. Approximately a fourth of Americans tune into the event every year. Thus, ads can become costly. With brands paying nearly $5 million for just 30 seconds of screen time, you can bet these are some of the best ads of the year.

Turbo Tax

Yup! I couldn't believe it either when I sat through three minutes of a tax commercial. Turbo Tax has really stepped up their game this year. From Kathy Bates, DJ Khaled, to David Ortiz, the ads successfully appealed to various market segments with these well-known figures in film, music, and sports. The company cleverly advertised items that are tax-deductible, such as Bate's moving expenses and Khaled's new business expenses, through different scenarios. However, my biggest takeaway is that you can do your taxes anywhere with Turbo Tax, even on a wall like Humpty Dumpty. Check it out!

Mr. Clean
"This Super Bowl, Mr. Clean gets dirty." That's right. Mr. Clean finally got his sexy debut this season. Although still in his signature white t-shirt and pants, Mr. Clean adopted a completely new persona. He swept a homemaker off her feet with killer dance moves, while seductively cleaning the kitchen. The animated figure, unexpectedly, turned out to be her husband sweeping. Behind the amusement, this ad goes beyond to illustrate the growing equality between men and women in the household nowadays. Mr. Clean was predominately used by women in the past. However, it's slowly gaining recognition among the opposite sex. After all, "you gotta love a man who cleans."

Snickers

Props to Snickers for venturing out into something that's never been done before, THE FIRST EVER LIVE SUPER BOWL AD! The company released a short teaser of actor Adam Driver (his cardboard cutout) and a horse to inform viewers a bit on what to expect. The mini clips hint at a possible western theme. Nonetheless, this will be very interesting to see, as high expectations are set for the first ever live ad.

Among the name brands, I chose to particularly highlight Turbo Tax and Proctor & Gamble because taxes and cleaning supplies are not glamorous to advertise. However, they made it work in their favor. The ads were entertaining, yet informative. Snickers, on the other hand, took Super Bowl ads to another level by going live. The brand deserves recognition as well for its initiative.
