Blog 1 - Goodbye Vine

If you were on social media in 2013, you’ve probably heard of Vine. Vine is a video hosting service, where users can upload their own videos up to six seconds each. You could say Vine, at one point, was the Instagram of 2013. I remember watching Vine clips religiously for hours. The videos, ranging from musical performances to comedic skits, were entertaining, but also short enough to keep our attention span. What attracted me to the app was the authenticity of the videos. Anyone could effortlessly upload videos, without the need of professional cameras nor editing skills. Vine was credited to the rise of many social media campaigns. Brands, like Dunkin' Donuts, Disney, and Adidas, enjoyed great success on the platform.

Unfortunately, those good days have come to end for the video service app. Many, including myself, saw this coming. Despite having millions of followers, Vine failed to differentiate itself from other big players, particularly Snapchat and Instagram videos. There have been talks since last year for Twitter to discontinue the app. The company officially announced last month that Vine will be replaced as a camera app that links to Twitter. January 17th is the last day that users can save their uploaded videos before the conversion occurs.

On the bright side, at least Vine is trending on Twitter today. Many have come together to pay tribute and reflect on the app through the Vine hashtag.
