Blog 7 - Wall Street's Fearless Girl

As a finance major, I should probably know of State Street Global Advisors. It is the world's third largest asset manager with $2.4 trillion in assets. The company came to the public's attention last week during International Women's Day. SSGA installed a bronze statue of a young girl staring down the Charging Bull statue on Wall Street. Hence, the statue is called the Fearless Girl. Its purpose is to call attention to the lack of female leadership positions in the financial sector. The Fearless Girl is a part of SSGA's campaign to encourage gender diversity across companies' boards.

The Fearless Girl's popularity is soaring across the nation. One cannot read about International Women's Day without seeing the Fearless Girl. She has become the new symbol of this day, an inspiration for women and young girls nationwide. People are loving it. Moreover, they are talking about it. The topic of gender disparity is often overlooked, especially in the financial sector. I can testify to this because I am one of five females in my finance class. Women are largely outnumbered by men in this sector. Thus, it can sometimes feel intimidating to speak out. There's definitely more work to do. However, this statue is a great first step to spark up conversations of gender disparity across the nation. Hopefully, the Fearless Girl is here to stay.

  1. I am also a finance student and in my corporate finance class of 35 there were 3 girls total. It was a little intimidating and that is merely in a classroom setting. Very cool that the government allowed a female statue to stay alone and tall. Great job noting how they call attention to the lack of female leadership positions in the financial sector.

  2. I have always seen the bull statue as an intimidating figure which serves as a metaphor for the cutthroat nature of Wall Street. I appreciate the message the Fearless Girl sends about standing up to what is intimidating and also about women pursuing any goal, no matter how large.
